The question:

Stone Cold Steve Austin is best known for his professional wrestling skills, and The Condemned marks his first attempt at carrying a movie. He has had smaller parts in several movies, and our question this week is about a 2005 remake of movie that originally starred Burt Reynolds, but more recently featured Adam Sandler. What was the name of that movie that included a small role for "Stone Cold?"

Stone Cold before Spidey

Stone Cold Steve Austin fans, this is your week. The professional wrestler stars in The Condemned, a bit of violence and mayhem before Spiderman takes over the world the following week.

The movie industry is taking a collective breath this weekend, before three blockbusters are released in May. In addition to Spiderman 3, we will have Shrek the Third, and the third installment of Pirates of the Caribbean.

"Good things come in sequels" is our motto for the spring.

Our thanks to Troy Hicken and Robinson High School for allowing us to host 250 juniors and seniors on Thursday. The juniors are celebrating the end of high stakes testing, and the seniors are collecting on a debt owed to them, so they tagged along for the ride!

Next Thursday, we will have 100 first graders from Parkside Elementary in Lawrenceville come for a showing of Meet the Robinsons.

We love hosting school groups.

Get your midnight showing tickets for Spiderman 3. The show is 12:05 a.m. on Friday, May 4 (that's Thursday night, folks). Tickets are on sale at the box office now.

The Duke

The Los Angeles Times has a great feature story about the celebration of John Wayne's 100th birthday in Newport Beach, Cal., where the Duke lived after his 1965 diagnosis with lung cancer. In Southern Cali, time marches pretty quickly, and Wayne's mansion has been torn down and a lot of his hangouts have given way to "progress."

The missing mansion reminded me of our own case of the missing Duke. A few weeks ago, a few misguided college students heisted the lifesize standee of John Wayne out the back door. Yes. The Duke was put In Harm's Way, Pilgrim.

The students (or more accurately, "thieves") made the error of discussing how much they liked the Duke with one of our cast members, thereby putting her in the awkward position of telling what she knew to the on-premise sheriff, aka Manager Tom Welsh. Before he could stand Tall in the Saddle, Welsh was on the phone with one of the parents, who tracked down the Duke to a hideout in the direction of the Rio Grande.

The Quiet Man, the student's father, had some direct talk with his son, who confessed that Duke was in his room afar from home. We thought we might have to dispatch a Stagecoach to get Wayne back to the theater, but son delivered Duke to father, and dad delivered him to the theater.

We're still expecting the two kidnappers to get their Big Jake into the theater for a candid talk with Sheriff Welsh. Until then, this prank will Cast a Long Shadow and prevent us from letting them into the movies. This is not The Lawless Frontier, and we don't want any Trouble Along the Way, but the students need to show some True Grit and come in and 'fess up.

A little remorse could make this The Greatest Story Ever Told rather than Adventure's End.

Youngest of three brothers, Luke Wilson has been creating a name for himself as an actor, and not just a one-time beau of Drew Barrymore. This week he stars in Vacancy, one of an occasional number of dramatic roles. In 2003, he exercised his comedy chops by starring as one of a trio of men (Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell included) who become disenchanted with their lives and seek to recapture their youth. What WAS this movie, which also included an appearance by Ellen Pompeo ("Grey's Anatomy")?

A roach motel? (You check in, but never out...)

It's scary movie time at the Eagle.

Luke Wilson brings his boyish charm to Vacancy, which is garnering surprisingly good reviews. If you don't like blood and gore and prefer suffocating dread as your choice of chills, this may be the horror movie for you.

It is scary enough to get an R rating, so if you are under 17, drag your parents to watch it with you. Maybe they will let you sleep with your light on when you go to bed that night.

Otherwise, it is hold-over week at the Eagle. We managed to keep 300 for late shows on Friday and Saturday, giving Crawford County one more chance to see this blockbuster.

My family got out to see Blades of Glory last week, and I was (pleasantly) surprised by how good it was. Will Ferrell was more restrained than I've seen him in awhile, and Jon Heder supplied the goofy, almost feminine, charm as the other half of the ice skating duo.

If you want a G-rated family movie, Meet the Robinsons is still here, though it is giving way at the late show on Friday and Saturday for 300.

The BEST movie (in my humble opinion) playing at the theater is Disturbia, which is a smart thriller with a young cast and David Morse as a creepy neighbor suspected of being a serial killer. The title is even a bit clever to, don't you think?

Are We Done Yet? rounds out the selections for the week.

The industry is taking a collective deep breath before rolling into May with three movies that are guaranteed to be blockbusters--SpiderMan 3, Shrek the Third, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

We are planning a midnight showing of SpiderMan 12:05 a.m. Friday, May 4 (that's a school night because Friday just started, get it?). Tickets will be on sale THIS Friday for that showing in a few weeks, and if you read our blog or get the newsletter, you are getting a heads up before the general public. We have about 320 tickets available for that midnight showing.

You gotta have heart!

A number of you have asked about my father, Don, who recently had another heart attack and spent a week at Crawford Memorial Hospital.

After a rough couple of weeks following discharge, he is getting back most of his energy and will begin cardiac rehab soon. His appetite is back, but we haven't heard him whistling much yet. He moves a little slower, walks with a cane, and is taking it easy until Tyrone gets ahold of him for rehab.

Thanks for all the expressions of interest and concern. In addition to his role in having hatched me, my father is a stockholder in the theater.

'Disturbia' opens Friday; '300' held over

Disturbia is this week's new movie. Here's what "Variety" has to say about it:

[B]rings Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window" into the era of vidcams and cell phones, serving up hearty, youth-skewing portions of PG-13 violence and bikini-bait along the way.

Translation: This is a very well-made teen movie that doubles as a suspense thriller. We like movies that take chances by stretching their genre, and this looks like a smart, fun movie for people 13 and up.

300 is staying with us another week, albeit while sharing a screen with Firehouse Dog. The week just finished was one of those odd ball weeks where every movie in the house did well, but not spectacular. Just good, steady crowds--no blockbusters, but a solid slate.

Actor David Morse has a role in this week's "Disburbia," which opens Friday at the Eagle. Morse is remembered for a variety of roles, including as Doctor "Boomer" Morrison on television's "St. Elsewhere" and as a prison guard in the film "The Green Mile." Most recently, Morse did six episodes on a popular television medical drama as Detective Michael Tritter, who made it his personal mission to bust the title character in this television drama. What was the name of the television show where Morse guest starred this season?

Wild Hogs Comes in Close 2nd !!

Wow!!!! What a Thursday night!  Over 400 of you came to the big screen.  However, not enough came to see Wild Hogs, so Passion of Christ still reigns as King at the Eagle.    Wild Hogs ends its run with a total of 4,453 admissions.  Passion still sits at number 1 with 4,532.   Thanks for making it happen.  See you soon.

Zack Snyder is the director of 300, which is based on the graphic novel's treatment of the heroic Spartan stand at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. Snyder is not a household name, but he DOES have at least one film that he directed that you might have heard about. It was a 2004 horror feature that had the following plot:
